In 2024, LaLa arena TOKYO-BAY opened in Funabashi, Chiba. The arena serves as the home arena of the top team of a professional basketball club that includes many players who have represented Japan. The locker room is a space where the team’s players change and hold meetings before games and during halftime.
Our design approach centered on creating the optimal mental state for top athletes immediately before a game. One answer we arrived at was to design a place where athletes can remain calm and composed.
Before a game, athletes prepare themselves to perform consistently by maintaining both a fighting spirit and a sense of calm. For this reason, we deliberately avoided using the team color, red, throughout the space, keeping its presence in the interior to a minimum. Instead, we used wood extensively—a material that works well with red while creating a sense of calm—to create a lounge-like environment where players can maintain their composure.
The team logo is incorporated into the ceiling and floor at the center of the space. This composition is intended to remind the players that they are part of the team and to reinforce their awareness that they are competing for the team.
